David Maraga, the former Chief Justice, has been appointed to head Rwanda's election observation team.
Former Chief Justice of Kenya, David Maraga, has been appointed by the East African Community (EAC) to lead the election observation mission for Rwanda. In a press briefing held on Friday in Kigali, EAC Secretary-General Veronica Nduva announced Maraga's role in overseeing 55 observers deployed across the country to monitor compliance with electoral laws during Rwanda's upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections on July 15 and 16, 2024.
"It is therefore my privilege to officially announce Chief Justice (emeritus) David Maraga of Kenya as the leader of the EAC election observation mission to Rwanda's general election 2024," she stated. "Our mission is to ensure adherence to international, regional, and national electoral standards, respecting Rwanda's own electoral procedures, and offering supportive partnership throughout the process."
Following the appointment, Maraga emphasized the importance of a peaceful and successful election for the entire East African Community. "Our team will assess compliance with electoral processes and management, evaluating adherence to democratic principles as outlined in the EAC Treaty," he commented. "We will provide objective recommendations for ongoing enhancement of electoral practices."
Rwandan President Paul Kagame seeks reelection for a fourth term, facing competition from opposition candidates Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana.
